CRAG LOUGH

(High Shield Crag)

Climbs east of Ivy Tower

Crag picture

Just to the left of the Tower there is a short buttress which has a tree growing out of a crack at the bottom. It originally provided interest because 'Cecil', a block 6 feet high, was precariously balanced on its top. It used to sway slightly in a strong wind. However, it fell from its perch sometime during the War. The climb still bears the pinnacles name.

(45) Cecil. 30 feet. Moderately difficult.
The climb commences just to the left of the tree at the foot. Traverse diagonally right and finish on good holds on the right hand face. An easy descent from the top can be made down the grassy gully on the right.

(46) Easter Wall. 35 feet. Severe
The continuation to the top of the Crag from the top of Cecil. Step onto the face immediately in front and ascend on small holds into a groove. From here easy rocks lead to the top.

Further east the Crag is much more broken up and no definite routes have been recorded to date.
